O'Neil, who was in her high school year when she took part in the auditions, volunteered for the third season of Canadian Idol during the first months of 2005. The quality of her singing impressed panel of judges and she received a promotion to the 100th round. O'Neil received high praise from the jury. However, she was a major loser in both the top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. It was a shock to the judges and they recommended that the public choose Melissa O'Neil, who was the contestant with the most impressive singing abilities. O'Neil wasn't in the third place again following an impressive string of performance. Her two additional performances on September 7,2005, in which O'Neil advanced into the final two of the competition's contest, Werner said that in the morning, newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie as she became the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female champion. O'Neil was promptly congratulated by Canadian PM Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
